Pro-Am Week 5, Week 6 *Updated

A quick note before we get started. Some of you may have read an earlier version of this post, and astute readers probably recognized a lot of the matchups and commentary. This is because the same matchups and commentary also appeared on last week's update.

Obviously we had a little hiccup; the post was published before all the information was finalized. Hopefully nobody finished reading and wondered why all the 1.6 and TF2 teams were scheduled against the same opponents on the same map with the same comments from the previous week, but I'm sure there was a little confusion, and maybe a pinch of deja-vu with a sprinkle of "what-the-heck-is-the-CGS-doing??"

In any event, we apologize for the mixup any confusion it might have caused.

Moving on...

As always, if any of the teams listed here want to send me confirmed match times and/or SRCTV/HLTV information, I’d love to update that information as it comes in. This goes for all games and teams listed here. Feel free to PM me through the website or e-mail me at landodger@thecgs.com with the information, and I’ll keep updating the post as information comes in.

And with that, let’s get to the schedule!

What You Need to Know

There was a lot of interesting action last week, so let's get right to it.

First of all, Vanskap upped their game and snapped Chicago's five-game winning streak. The Chimera was undefeated, but now they join Complexity as the only CGS teams to suffer a loss this season. I'm not sure how people reacted to the result, to be honest. I can understand surprise. A lot of people have probably never heard of Vanskap. At the same time, they've done this before. They shocked people at Newegg LANFest 2k7, and they've got some really good players. I'm not totally shocked, and it's worth noting that Vanskap now sits atop the Pacific standings with only three weeks left in the season.

Week 5 also featured a clash of the Titans as New York took on Los Angeles on Season. 3D snuck out a close win 10-8, but neither team looked particularly sharp. Then again, it's hard to look sharp when you have to pause the match a few times because of server problems--there were a couple of those while the servers issues died down, and it's pretty easy to lose focus during the downtime. Overall it was a fair performance for Complexity. I was a little worried their jaunt in 1.6 would hurt their feel for Source, but for now it looks like they'll have a much easier to transition back to Source than they did from Source to 1.6 (which makes sense considering the relative times they spent away from each game.)

Still, the loss does bring them to 3-2, and that's a dangerous, dangerous position. They need to win out to give themselves a good shot at the playoffs and an eventual title. This is probably the first big storyline from the Pro-Am action. LA, along with the other prominent two-loss teams, Zomblerz and Hyper, have their backs against the wall. All that's left is to see how they respond.

Taking a look ahead, FEVER's match against 9Frame caught my eye, but the cream of this week's matches should be New York against the '94 Knicks. The '94 Knicks will be in the same 2-loss situation as everybody else if they lose, and I'll be watching the match (or a replay, hopefully) to see if Funshine, griff, and co. can pull off the huge win.

Counter-Strike 1.6 (de_inferno)

Matches of Interest
Team Opponent
LA Complexity (5 - 0) Revolution Sports (5 - 0)
Evil Geniuses (3 - 0) Team Guardians (3 - 0)
Green Berets (2 - 1) unLimited (2 - 2)
Paragon of Virtue (3 - 0) phoeniX (3 - 1)
34 (4 - 0) Right2Rule (4 - 1)
x3o (1 - 0) Princess (1 - 3)
MoB Gaming (1 - 0) Tecnica (1 - 3)

What You Need to Know:

We got two awesome matches here. Complexity and EG are taking on Revolution Sports and Team Guardians, respectively. It's not quite a match between x3o and MoB, but it's pretty darn close. Guardians and Revolution Sports have talented, veteran players. I'm not sure either of them will win, but I'll still be downloading and watching the demos if I can't see the matches live.

Other than that, there isn't much going on. I added team34 to the list, but there hasn't been a lot of compelling action between the potential champions. It looks like the major teams will coast into the playoffs, and the biggest scheduled match to date, x3o vs. MoB, hasn't been played yet. That should take place on Train, and I'll make sure to update the results when it happens.

Team Fortress 2 (cp_well)

Matches of Interest
Team Opponent
Eximius Sports (5 - 0) Pandemic (5 - 0)
Apoplexy Industries (4 - 1) XMensity (4 - 1)
Devastation (4 - 1) eXorsus (4 - 1)
start the Reactor! (3 - 1) ferveNt (3 - 1)
Sway Gaming (3 - 1) Check-Six (4 - 0)
4Ever Gamers (3 - 1) Ghosts of Darkness (4 - 1)

What You Need to Know:

For the record, I'd like to point out that I don't make the schedules. You might be wondering this because last week I said, "I'm also hoping for an Eximius-Pandemic match in Week 6. That would be a must-see event considering not only their records this season, but how they've been winning. A fan can dream, right?"

And who says dreams don't come true?

Obviously that's my highlight, must-see match for this week. Both teams are undefeated, and neither team has dropped a round. I'm willing to bet that will change, but you never know. All I know is that it should be a great match.

There are some other big matches happening, too. Apoplexy vs. XMensity should be good, and Check-Six vs. Sway will be interesting, as well. It's a jam-packed week in TF2, and it should shed some more light on not only the playoff picture, but how the teams will fare going against each other in the post-season.

As always, good luck to all the teams!
